The Vichy Treasury

Must read 🏆

Conor Bender has woven pirates, treasure, Nazis, lost souls and unlikely heroes into a roaring good read of World War II historical fiction.

The Vichy Treasury by Conor Bender is a tale about a true life or death treasure hunt.

War is an expensive undertaking. For this reason, during WWII the gold reserves of France, Belgium, Luxembourg and Poland were hidden. If discovered, this prize could tip the scales of war and finance a Nazi victory. Just as important, when the war ends these funds will be essential to rebuild the countries plowed under by the German war machine.

The treasure hunters are a mixed cast of conflicted characters operating on different levels. On the global level the Allies are fighting the Axis. Nationally, within France the Vichy, the German puppet government led by Marshall Petain and the Free French led by De Gaulle are pitted against each other. Within the Vichy government there are those who willingly collaborate with the Germans and those who covertly fight the Nazis. Likewise, the Germans are split between true believers like Gestapo Major Muller and Oberst Rudolph Goethe, who like Faust, has made a pact with the devil. In the midst of all this mayhem and divisiveness stumble three petty smugglers trying to survive the war and appease a psychopathic warlord.

The dictionary defines treasure as, “something that is very special, important or valuable.”1

Bender takes full advantage of the upside down world of war to paint a picture of the multiple meanings of treasure. To the Allies it is victory over Germany. To the occupied countries it is a peaceful and independent future. To the two Senegalese brothers it’s an ancient boat. To Gavin it’s a broken watch. To Valerie it’s her independence. But in war the ultimate treasure is survival.

Author Conor Bender takes a true WWII event, wraps it in a fictional format, mixes real historical people with layered, believable fictional characters, crafts a plot full of suspense, then like an alchemist, mixes this magical blend and the result is pure gold.
